Artist Of The Week: Our Atlantic Roots

Our Artist Of The Week is Cornwall based alt folk duo Our Atlantic Roots! Bringing an uplifting blend of American and British alternative folk, with harmonies that are rich and dynamic is their superpower. Mac’s country bluegrass roots add a popular authentic southern US vibe to many songs, with the more folk-inspired influence coming from Laura.

The husband/wife duo met in Asheboro, North Carolina in August 2012. Just a few weeks after meeting, Mac and Laura wrote their first song together. They relocated to the UK a few years later. September 2017 saw the release of Mac and Laura’s debut EP ‘First Light’ recorded with award-winning folk producer Andy Bell. Their follow-up EP ‘Little Bird’ really stood out to us, and we’re not surprise that it has been featured on some of the most popular indie/folk playlists out there. It’s a beautiful blend of Americana and British folk at it’s best, and their harmonies are something out of this world.

When you first see and hear this duo play together, you immediately realise their love for music and particularly the love of doing this together. Their voices knit together in a way that can only be done with either years of working together in the studio, or just years of living together. I guess they can tick both boxes.

Artist Of The Week: Coumarin

We are stoked to announce Coumarin as our Artist Of The Week! Hovering in the world of popular music while mixing in parts from indie, folk and punk gives Coumarin their ear catching sound.

What started its journey as frontman André Kretschmar’s solo project, is now a 3 piece band that marry meaning and aesthetics. To date they have released 5 stand-alone singles. Listening through, we have to mention the ever popular 80s nostalgia. We can draw lines to American New Wave Pop band The Midnight. It makes you want to plug in your VHS player and re-watch all the classics like Goonies, Back To The Future and Flight of the Navigator. Lean back into the pool of synths, delay guitars, head shaking drum beats, with the occasional synth or guitar solo. Press play and fly over the scenery of a 80s Si-Fi adventure movie.

Artist Of The Week: Laura Elizabeth Hughes

Our Artist Of The Week is Dublin born singer/songwriter Laura Elizabeth Hughes. With a brand new EP “We, Myself, I” out, Laura is certainly one to watch.

Throughout her time as a performer Laura has had the privilege of supporting artists like Dermot Kennedy, James Bay and Billie Marten. This does not come as a surprise at all, with her captivating storytelling talent. The Irish Times called her “Gentle yet steely, formidable yet tender.” which describes her music perfectly. She writes from a deep place in a way that draws the listener in to her own world, and don’t want to leave any time soon.

Laura’s inimitable vocals combined with her arresting lyrical ability has seen her earn plaudits from both the media and her peers and establish herself as a rising talent among a fresh new group of emerging Irish songwriters. We can’t wait to hear more from Laura Elizabeth Hughes in the future.

Artist Of The Week: A. Smyth

This week’s Artist Of The Week is Dublin born dreamy folk-rocker A. Smyth. He just released his haunting debut album, Last Animals – a rumination on nature and the meaning of life.

After attracting much praise for his work as Vann Music, Smyth delivers a highly impressive Last animals. It’s a mellow and intelligent debut of warm Indie Folk / Americana, with gentle melodies and soft vocals. With electronic embellishments and new-thinking production elements, A. Smyth’s new album is a uniquely put together piece of art.

There is no wallowing in folk miserabilism or copying of tried-and-tested singer songwriter templates, just a quality album with enough variation to bring you back for a second listen. As debut albums come, this is as promising as it gets.

Artist Of The Week: Samantha Lindo

We’re excited to have soul & UK jazz artist Samantha Lindo as our Artist Of the Week. After the feature of Lindo’s first single in the BBC Sounds ‘Hot List’ curated by BBC Introducing and BBC 6 Music, this amazing Bristol based artist of mixed Jamaican heritage’s new track ‘Lights Go Out’, written on ‘black out Tuesday’, promises to pack just as much of a punch.

Speaking as someone who is mixed race but passes for white, her perspective straddles experiences and identities and Samantha has been talking about issues of racial justice for a decade. Nitelife magazine describes how she ‘weaves poetry, spoken word and beautiful lyricism’ through her songs, ‘presenting some very real and raw issues of love, life and the human condition’ and the new track ‘Lights Go Out’, which brings together her music and activism, is no exception. The song is upbeat, fun and hopeful but it also speaks truth.

Her previous single ‘Underside’, with a more slow, shoulder moving groove was launched at her last live show before lockdown at Rough Trade and was performed live on BBC Radio Bristol, receiving rave press reviews of her ‘spine tingling vocal performance’.

Lights Go Out is inspired by Janelle Monae’s Turntables, the gospel roots of Micheal Kiwanuka and BBC 6 Music’s 2020 album of the year winners, Sault and you can hear flavours of the Afro-beat, soul and RnB sprinkled in that influence her sound. Her authentic style and musicality draws from a wide range of influences, from vocal greats like Etta James to spoken word prophetess Kae Tempest, as she harnesses the intrinsic power of the female vocal to speak beauty & truth.

She’ll be performing it live for the first time at internationally renowned St George’s Bristol, on Thursday the 10th of June alongside Brit award nominee Beth Rowley, Eliza Shaddad and Bristol’s Murmuration Choir as well as hosting an online performance and Q&A especially for her Patreon members on Thursday the 11th of March.

Nitelife Online said ‘I can well imagine Samantha shooting up to the top with an alarming speed – eyes peeled for this girl!’ And we most certainly second that statement with confidence.
