Artist Of The Week: beware of leopards

Our Artist Of The Week is beware of leopards.

They are a band from the south west of England and are breaking into the live music scene.

Having released an album in 2019, Ethan, Cal and Phil are looking to hit the stage full force, and make it a night the crowd won’t forget. With electrifying shows, joyful and emotive lyrics, and a killer atmosphere, you don’t want to miss out on this up-and-coming band.

beware of leopards are fusing the indie alt rock psychedelia of Incubus with Arcade Fire’s punchy pop-tinged sound and a little pinch of Arctic Monkeys. ‘Self’ is gloriously garnished with stadium vibes, delay guitars, vibrant looping and sample work, topped up with a great clean male vocal that uncovers more and more layers the more you listen to it.

Artist Of The Week: The Racket

Our Artist Of The Week is The Racket!

They are a four-piece indie rock band from Widnes. Their songs are powerful, energetic and politically charged, with an attitude. Liverpool Noise said that “Live, the band is a swirling, frenetic, cascade of energy, more speed than weed, they own any stage they set foot on – totally – and bristle with power.”

Their success started in 2017 when they began selling out numerous shows across Liverpool and Manchester. They hit the ground running, touring the UK and France, with acts such as Louis Berry, The Lottery Winners, Cast and Twisted Wheel, along with some major festival appearances at This Is Tomorrow, Sound City, Tramlines and Great Escape.

‘Why Are You Watching Me?’ is loud, explosive and edgy, and will certainly excite listeners. It’s also a proven fan favourite following their 12-date support tour with Lottery Winners in autumn. Its catchy melody and huge chorus is something that will make the song easily syncable and radio-friendly.

Songwriter Callum says: “This has always been a fun song to play, it’s probably one of the most guitar-driven songs we have recorded yet. The song is about 1984 and the dystopian present day we live in, but we have gone about this in a more light-hearted way.”

Producer Jonathan Tringham says: “We focused a lot of time on capturing the sounds that had the most convincing energy, this is definitely the most exciting song the lads have put out so far.”

Artist Of The Week: Shyer

Our next Artist Of The Week is Shyer, led by the Cambridge-based songwriting duo, Amanda and Zak.

After a two-year hiatus, Shyer is back. The duo’s jangly, infectious indie pop rock has won them airplay on the likes of BBC 6 Music’s ‘Fresh on the Net’, BBC Introducing Mixtape and Amazing Radio. They are out with a new EP called ‘Still Life’.

The EP sounds festival-sized, with huge guitars, a tight backline and powerful yet dreamy vocals.

Artist Of The Week: Tom Webber

Artist Of The Week is the magnificent Tom Webber!

Tom is a young singer-songwriter who has been making a name for himself locally around the Oxfordshire area over the last few years. His self-produced debut EP ‘Stop and Think About It’ has been well reviewed on social media and received good play from both BBC Introducing and Gary Crowley, who described it as “just lovely – a real gem and Tom is a genuine talent”.

Tom has a nostalgic and unique voice. It sits beautifully between the legends Sam Cooke and Paulo Nutini, with a raspiness and vibrato that tells a story of its own. Anyone who sees Tom live or hears his music will quickly notice his inspiration from old classics. He captures the mellower sound from the rock ‘n’ roll era gorgeously with a modern high-fidelity production.

Growing up with his grandfather as his music mentor, Tom loved listening to anyone from The Everly Brothers to Sam Cooke to Hank Williams. After studying for a degree in Audio Production at the SAE Institute in Oxford, which has clearly helped him produce this EP, Tom has been busy writing and playing gigs. 2022 sees him supporting Nick Lowe on his UK tour in April, playing The Henley Festival on July 8th, the Truck Festival and a number of shows around the country. Keep your ears out for this legend in the making.

Artist Of The Week: FloodHounds

Artist Of The Week is FloodHounds!

They deliver tight, rabble-rousing live shows, bursting with startlingly jagged guitar, driving bass and wild rhythmic drums, and with side-swipes of distorted harmonica. Lyrically catchy, the indie rock trio’s powerful punk- and blues-infused tunes stay with you long after the gig.

This track is a blast of raucous alt-rock, welded together with stomping, fuzzed-up guitars, punk energy and riff-heavy grooves, featuring distorted vocals and a tightly held together back line. Feeling nostalgic yet fresh, it touches lyrically on the theme of remaining unified instead of giving in to panic, alienation and uncertainty, and is sure to get stuck in your head.

With a new line-up and new music, the band recently landed a string of excellent shows, from a rammed Tramlines Fringe set, to curating their own hometown headline show for the opening night of Sensoria Festival, playing Wentworth Festival, returning to Nottingham’s sold-out Bodega to support Kid Kapichi in November. Pre-lockdown highlights include: being playlisted on BT TV, receiving songwriting awards from Richard Hawley, playing major festivals like Isle Of Wight & Liverpool Sound City, gigs all over the country, and sharing the stage with the likes of The Blinders, Calva Louise, King Nun, Childcare, BlackWaters, and Strange Bones.
