Our AOTW is Camens
For Stoke-On-Trent band, Camens, who were pushed to the brink through cancelled gigs and various bouts of isolation, the end was painfully and regrettably nigh. That was until their fans showed them just how much they meant to people, not just at home, but all over the world. Testament to this is the band’s last single, ‘Poltergeist’. It has amassed nearly 30K plays on Spotify, featured in various editorial playlists (Apple, YouTube, Soundcloud etc.) and had hundreds of different radio station plays across the likes of Amazing Radio and XS Manchester. It even earned track of the week with the latter.

Perhaps Camens at their most summery and idiosyncratic, ‘Illustrator’ channels all the aspirational bombast of ‘00s indie and provides it with a contemporary twist. This single is a refreshing and intelligent take on a tried-and-tested format – anthemic indie made for festival stages. Clocking in at just under three minutes, ‘Illustrator’ is a track that lends itself perfectly to radio and promises to lodge itself in your head to the point that you’ll be humming it long after it’s finished.
Lyrically, it’s about being attracted to creatives – girls who act, sing, play music, dance etc. The writer says, “I stumbled across the chorus almost by accident, then the verses took shape over a few weeks in isolation during the first lockdown. I have a big architect drawing table, with a big flip chart pad on it. Whenever I get an idea, it goes on the board. Some songs come together in five minutes, others are an amalgamation of ideas over a longer period. This was one of those.”
