Richer Unsigned Session – November
It’s that time of year again. That time when we start winding down for the holidays, and turn our attention to festive parties, time with family and friends and the inevitable stream of endless year-end “Top 10” lists.
It also means that we’ve arrived at our last Unsigned Session of 2017. Luckily for us, things went out on a high note and with a bang thanks to two incredible bands that swung through Melomania and rocked the house.
First up was Mellow Gang. This four-piece formed when they met each other while attending university in London, and their slinky psychedelic-tinged pop sounds filled Melomania sweetly. Highlights for the band this year was playing a brand new venue in Cardiff while supporting The Amazons as well as playing The Great Escape in Brighton. We asked the band if they thought the steps Richer Unsigned takes to give a boost to upcoming artists are helpful: “One hundred percent”, answered lead singer/guitarist Heather. “Particularly having the Spotify playlists in the shops”, adds bassist Shenny, “because the people coming in to Richer Sounds know their music.” The band gave us a live sneak preview of their new single that’s out in January, so keep your ears open – trust us when we say it’s not one to miss!
Closing out the final Unsigned Session of the year was Devon. The brainchild of signer/songwriter/frontman Devon, the full band came together after a few other local bands in Gloucestershire fell apart. Devon had a busy 2017, going on his first big tour supporting The Strypes, and 2018 is looking pretty sweet as well, with a Live at Leeds slot already booked in. The boys completed dominated our stage with an incredibly tight and high-energy performance, especially when playing their current single “Weirdo”. So does Devon think the platform we offer to indie artist like him is helpful? “Definitely. It’s really hard these days to get your music into different places, and it can cost a lot of money. So it’s really helpful to have someone getting it to new audiences”. Devon tells us he’s in the midst of writing a new single that should be out sometime in January.
As the year raps up, we want to say a big thank you to all of the bands that have performed for us at Melomania, as well as the Melomania staff for all their hard work. As well, a very special thanks to our industry guests and music fans alike that dropped in to catch these amazing performances. See you next year!
